I ve heard good things about Gene Logsdon, and this is the only book of his my town library had I started a backyard vegetable garden this year after years of having no interest in growing food, only flowers, and I love it and have become really interested in organic gardening and farming practices while I don t think I m going to go start a farm anytime soon, I really enjoyed this book while this is dated, I really appreciated his philosophy and emphasis on organic gardening and farming and I got some great ideas out of it for my own backyard garden.

Though this book dates from 1973 and offers Logsdon s early writing not as polished as today s work but earnest and folksy and welcoming , it provides a good deal of useful and tested information about homesteading, even on a small acreage Logsdon covers fruit and vegetables, grain raising, livestock, and general farm information in a no nonsense and realistic way meaning, don t expect to make your entire living from the homestead and reminds the prospective homesteader that if you don t have time to relax and enjoy the beauty around you, you re not doing it right.

This is a great example of the contrary farmer before Gene Logsdon was named the contrary farmer While I don t agree with all his methods and approaches replanting strawberries for example I do think he provides and excellent insight into the possibilities on a homestead.
